This Just In! Dennis from Armato’s to demo HD
Dennis Hopkins from Armato’s has just announced that he will be coming to our meeting to show off two brand new Sony camcorders: the EX1, which is the new HD camcorder that uses XDCAM technology and no tapes…1/2” CMOS chips and great low-light capabilities. Don’t miss it!! Also, Dennis will be bringing in the “even newer” Sony HVR-Z7U, first shown at the 4 Ever convention in January. That one is an HDV camcorder that uses mini tapes and will also record to compact flash cards. It also features three (1/3”) CMOS chips.
Spectacular Gadget Fest and DIY Lighting Expo!
Bring your gadget! Anything video-related you have made or bought to make life easier. We have lots of pretty smart members who have created things ranging from brackets and cases to lights to make our jobs run smoother.
Bring in what you use for camera lighting (on-camera or otherwise). Do you power the light from a belt pack, or is the light self-powered? How many watts is it?
Also bring in what you use to support your cameras - so if you use a PD-170 or an EX1, or a Panny or JVC, how do you hold it steady? Monopod? Brace? Bring it in and demonstrate for all to see!
Everyone has something they do or use that is unique. So share it! This should be fun.
Brown Bag Video Festival II
Everyone wants to see video….so bring in something to share. If you brought your stuff to the January meeting but didn’t get to show it, bring it again.

Innovation Station By Tim Ryan of The 4Ever Group
Become inspired! New marketing concepts, innovative new products, plus intriguing shooting and editing techniques.
Innovation Station is The 4EVER Group’s way of bringing all of the newest concepts in event video production to you. Fresh and exciting production, sales and marketing ideas come up almost every day, and this presentation helps identify the most intriguing and profit-producing possibilities for your studio.
Tim Ryan will identify some of the video production and marketing concepts that will be of the greatest interest to your meeting attendees. Short-form weddings, Time-Shifting and Same-Day Edits were once revolutionary concepts. They gained or are gaining acceptance as videographers realized the enormous potential these products had. With Innovation Station, The 4EVER Group will introduce the next generation of ground-breaking products and services.
Videotaping Jewish Wedding Ceremonies
Originally planned for the October meeting, this presentation will describe the different Jewish wedding ceremonies so you will be better prepared to shoot weddings for your Jewish clients.
Although most branches of Judaism follow the same basic wedding ceremony, there are many specific differences in practices and traditions. There are different Orthodox traditions, differences between Ashkenazi (Jews originally from western Europe) and Sephardim (Jews originally from Spain) traditions, among others. You need to know what comes next and which activities are especially important, in order to fully capture a Jewish wedding and produce a video that your clients will love.
Charlie Ortiz and Moshe Yuda, who between them have been the videographers for hundreds and hundreds of Jewish weddings of all types, will explain the different traditions. It’s more than just whether the groom breaks a glass or a light-bulb. You’ll learn when the Moms break a plate, who dances with who, when the bride’s veil is lowered and raised, what happens in a Sephardi wedding, and what the Ketubah ceremony is all about. Most importantly, you’ll learn the difference between the kallat and hatan.
Charlie and Moshe will share their knowledge and experience, and help you make your next Jewish wedding video a success.
July-18-Adobe on the new Adobe Production Premium CS3
Dennis Radeke, a video expert from Adobe Systems, will be showing off the latest version of the video suite called, Production Premium CS3. In addition to showing off new features in such staple applications as Photoshop CS3 Extended, Premiere Pro CS3 and After Effects CS3, Dennis will spend time talking about workflows and problems that creators face when trying to move between applications and how Production Premium aims to simplify these problems. You’ll not want to miss this presentation. He will also allow time to answer any questions.
Check out Dennis’ blog at http://blogs.adobe.com/genesisproject/ It focuses on the basics of After Effects and Photoshop for beginners, and has several excellent tutorials.
Bring a video to share and we will show it. Time permitting. Brown bag
Special June Event - Trip to the Iron Videographer Competition!
In place of our regular meeting, for June PVCJ has arranged for our members to go to the Iron Videographer competition at the Long Island Videographers Association (LIVA). We have chartered a mini-bus, which will take us from Yesterday’s Italian Restaurant to the event at the Marriott Hotel in Uniondale, Long Island. Pizza and/or subs and soda will be served! The date is Tuesday, June 12, leaving Yesterday’s at 4:00 PM. Note the day and time change from our usual meeting. There is no extra charge for this trip for members.
The Iron Videographer is a new, unique competition sponsored by the 4EVER Group. To quote from their web site:
Inspired by the cable TV show "Iron Chef", the Iron Videographer competition will feature two combatants creating a Highlights Video from identical footage in the Editing Stadium. At the conclusion of the competition, an expert panel of judges will select the winner. Winners in each regional competition will meet in the semi-final round at a Video Summit in the Fall of 2007.
"This brand-new competition will let attendees see how outstanding editors create a finished product under an unusual kind of pressure: on the clock, and in front of a crowd," explained Steve Wernick, Director of Development. “And just like in the Iron Chef, our editors will be interviewed during the contest, so attendees can get clear answers on their thought processes."
The “Iron Videographers” you will see editing like crazy chefs are Darrell Aubert of Event Digital Video, Wescosville, PA, and Glen Elliott of GM Elliott Videography, Williamstown, NJ.
You must email Trish Kondreck by Friday, June 8 if you plan to join us this month, so that we can be sure we have the right size minibus and enough pizzas. Email Trish now: videotrish@comcast.net

PVCJ Features Two Great Workshops!
Workshop 1: Audio Advice from Emmy Award-Winning Sound Pro
Rich Topham, winner of four Emmy Awards for sound recording, is presenting Workshop 1 of February’s PVCJ meeting. Rich has 30 years of experience with pro sound recording, and is president of Professional Sound Services, the pro audio store in New York. He will talk about the kinds of audio technical and product issues that typically bedevil the event videographer:
ü choosing mics for event and corporate applications
ü how and why to place your mic for great pick-up
ü the ins and outs of audio mixers
ü and more!
If you’ve puzzled over which mic is best, what adapter to use with the DJs sound board, or how to set up your camera audio, you will learn a lot from Rich. As a special bonus, Rich will have an expert selection of mics and accessories--windshields for lapel mics, shoe mounts, adapters--for show and sell at great prices.
Workshop 2: Overcoming Our Biggest Problem - Closing the Sale
At the January workshop, business coach Susan Koval asked what is the biggest problem we face as event videographers. Most of us at the meeting answered, “closing the sale.” So, for Workshop 2 of the February meeting, PVCJ board member Alla Krutyansky will give strategies and tips for handling objections and closing the sale.
Alla and her husband, Mark, have been in the event videography business for 15 years, and run two studios - Video Magic Studios and Abella Studios. She has successfully sold videography to more than 1,000 brides. Alla has heard all the objections you can think of and more. She will share some of what she’s learned about overcoming them.
To get the most out of this workshop, make a list of the most difficult objections that you’ve heard from clients and bring the list with you. Alla will give you ways to turn those objections into sales.
